Bizum Pay launches in Spain, enabling NFC mobile payments directly from bank accounts
Bizum introduced Bizum Pay on 14 July 2026, allowing Spanish consumers to pay in physical stores by tapping their NFC‑enabled smartphones. The service links directly to the user’s bank account, eliminating the need for Apple Pay, Google Pay or a physical card. More than one million point‑of‑sale terminals—about 60 % of Spain’s total—already support the technology, and the rollout is expected to achieve nationwide coverage shortly.
Merchants benefit from lower transaction fees compared with traditional card schemes, and no hardware changes are required. Major banks such as Santander, BBVA, Caixabank, Sabadell and ING are participating. With over 20 million Bizum users, the launch positions Spain as the first European country to adopt a bank‑linked NFC payment model, potentially reshaping the domestic payments landscape and prompting similar moves in other European markets.
