Béjar medieval wall faces deterioration as regional government withdraws funding commitment

The regional government of Castilla y León has reportedly withdrawn its commitment to fund the restoration of the 12th-century medieval wall in Béjar, Salamanca. Although the administration had previously pledged to intervene in 2026 to halt the monument's deterioration, the current Counselor of Culture, Tourism, and Sport, José Alberto Díaz Pico, has cited budgetary availability and property ownership issues as reasons for the shift.

The political group Unión del Pueblo Leonés (UPL) has formally denounced this reversal, noting that the previous administration under Gonzalo Santonja had made specific promises to ensure the conservation of the historic structure. UPL argues that the lack of action poses a risk of fatal consequences for the monument, which has origins dating back eight centuries.
