Uttar Pradesh MLC elections: BJP wins six seats, SP secures five
In the recent Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won six of the 11 contested seats, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) secured five. The results have sparked significant political debate ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
A major highlight of the contest was the SP’s performance in Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The SP won both the Varanasi Teachers’ and Varanasi Graduates’ constituencies, marking a symbolic setback for the BJP in a key stronghold.
Other notable victories for the SP include the Lucknow Graduates’ constituency, won by Kanti Singh, and the Agra Teachers’ constituency. The BJP managed to retain several seats, including the Meerut Graduates, Meerut Teachers, Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers, Lucknow Teachers, and Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers constituencies.
SP leader Akhilesh Yadav characterized the results as a sign of the public mood and a precursor to the upcoming state polls. Meanwhile, the BJP’s performance, while maintaining its seat count, faces scrutiny following losses in traditionally influential regions.
