BJP-backed candidates win Shimla Zila Parishad leadership posts

BJP-backed candidates Bhupender Sisodiya and Bharat Klanta have been elected Chairman and Vice-Chairman, respectively, of the Shimla Zila Parishad. This victory marks the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking control of the local body after nearly two decades in a district traditionally viewed as a stronghold for the ruling Indian National Congress.

Newly elected Chairman Bhupender Sisodiya attributed the election timing to a High Court intervention, alleging that the state government had attempted to delay the Panchayati Raj elections for six months. Sisodiya characterized the outcome as a sign of political shifts in the region and a setback for the Congress party ahead of the 2027 Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections.
