BJP electoral roll deletions drive West Bengal landslide, spark Telangana ration card panic

A Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in West Bengal removed more than nine million names between November and February. Statistical analysis shows a strong link between the shrinkage of the rolls and the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) sweeping victory, winning about 70% of the assembly seats on May 4. A similar SIR exercise in Bihar did not produce a comparable boost for the ruling alliance.

The West Bengal roll‑deletion episode has also triggered anxiety in Telangana. Social‑media messages warned that the Bengal case could lead to cancellations of ration cards unless beneficiaries complete e‑KYC verification. Local politicians and influencers urged people to update their biometric data by June 20, while civil‑supplies officials clarified that no cancellation orders have been issued in Telangana.
