BJP implements strategic moves to consolidate upper-caste support

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has implemented two major strategic decisions aimed at consolidating support among upper-caste voters, known as the Savarna community, ahead of upcoming assembly elections in several states, including Uttar Pradesh.

First, the central government has decided not to categorize castes into sub-castes within the upcoming census framework. This move is viewed as an effort to maintain the collective identity and political unity of the upper-caste community by avoiding granular data that could lead to internal fragmentation.

Second, the government is revisiting the University Grants Commission (UGC) Equity Regulations 2026. These combined actions are interpreted by analysts as tactical maneuvers to address the grievances of influential voting blocs and ensure voter loyalty in an increasingly competitive political landscape.
