BJP prepares for Silchar’s first Municipal Corporation election

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is preparing for the inaugural Silchar Municipal Corporation election, scheduled for October 3. Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia announced that the party’s Election and Management Committees will meet in Guwahati on September 7 to finalize candidates for the 42 wards, with the official list expected on September 8.

Saikia expressed confidence in securing a two-thirds majority in the 42-member corporation. He noted that while the BJP may enter into local-level seat arrangements with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in certain wards, such agreements would be limited to the local level.

The BJP’s campaign will focus on urban development and civic services. Key proposals include a ‘One City, One Digital Platform’ to allow residents to access municipal services—such as trade licenses, building permissions, and tax services—online and free of cost. The party also intends to address Silchar’s drainage issues and recurring artificial flooding through both short-term and long-term solutions.
