Andalusia leaders demand reactivation of OCON-Sur elite narcotics unit

Andalusian President Juanma Moreno has formally requested that the Spanish government reactivate OCON-Sur, an elite Guardia Civil unit specialized in combating drug trafficking that was disbanded four years ago. Moreno expressed deep concern in a letter to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, stating that drug mafias have expanded from specific regions to cover much of the Andalusian coastline and interior, creating a sense of insecurity and increasing violence.

Recent law enforcement operations highlight the scale of the issue. Spanish and German authorities dismantled an international network based in Marbella, seizing four tons of marijuana and 27.5 kg of cocaine. In another operation, police intercepted over 3,300 kg of cocaine being transported between Spain and Portugal. Additionally, 150 kg of cocaine was discovered hidden in fruit pulp at the Port of Algeciras.

Statistics from 2025 show that Andalusia remains a major hub for narcotics activity in Spain, recording 5,267 arrests for drug trafficking, which accounts for approximately 24% of the national total. During the Malaga Fair, police reported 126 brawls and 83 arrests, noting an increase in new-generation drugs.
