BKK launches tender for new tram line in Óbuda
The Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) has initiated a conditional public procurement procedure to select a designer for the Pacsirtamező Street tram development. The project aims to expand the Buda tram network by constructing approximately 3.5 kilometers of new track, creating an accessible connection between the city center, Óbuda, and the Kaszásdűlő HÉV station.
The planned route will run between Katinyi mártírok Park and the Kaszásdűlő HÉV station, passing through Pacsirtamező Street, Flórián tér, and Szentendrei út. This development is intended to provide a high-capacity rail alternative to the heavily used number 9 bus route and restore a tram connection that was removed in 1981.
According to BKK, the project is of strategic importance for the capital's public transport network. Restoring the previous direct connection could offer new travel options for 30,000 to 40,000 passengers daily, linking residential areas in inner Buda with the Váci út office corridor. The project also includes the renewal of affected public spaces to create a more pedestrian-friendly and accessible urban environment.
