BKK to expand Budapest bus fleet and test Bio-CNG technology
Budapest Transport Centre (BKV) has announced the acquisition of 20 new Mercedes-Benz Citaro K midibuses. This addition will expand the company’s current Citaro K fleet from 65 to 85 vehicles. These midibuses, measuring 10,633 mm in length, feature low floors for accessibility, air conditioning, USB charging ports, and advanced driver assistance systems including blind-spot monitoring.
In a separate sustainability initiative, BKV and MOL Group are testing a Bio-CNG powered bus on the 132E route on November 3 and 4. This trial vehicle runs on biomethane produced at MOL’s Szarvas plant, which utilizes organic waste to create renewable fuel. During the two-day test period, travel on the 132E line will be free for passengers. BKK CEO Ádám Bodor noted that Bio-CNG technology serves as a transitional solution to help phase out diesel fleets while the necessary infrastructure for a full transition to electric buses is developed.
