Béla Lugosi: The legacy of the actor who defined Count Dracula
Béla Lugosi, the actor synonymous with the role of Count Dracula, is remembered seventy years after his death on August 16, 1956. Born Béla Ferenc Dezső Blaskó in Lugoj, he rose to international fame after portraying the iconic vampire on Broadway in 1927 and subsequently in the 1931 film adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel.
Lugosi’s career spanned various stages, including the National Theatre in Budapest and later Hollywood. He was known for his collaborations with other horror icons, such as Boris Karloff, in films like Black Cat and The Raven. During World War I, he served as a lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian army.
His life ended following the filming of the science fiction movie Plan 9 from Outer Space, directed by Ed Wood, where he suffered a heart attack. In accordance with his wishes, he was buried wearing his Dracula costume.
