Bülach ice arena roof damaged by hailstorm

A severe hailstorm in Bülach, Switzerland, has caused significant damage to the roof of the Hirslen Ice Arena, leaving the facility unusable and threatening the existence of the local ice hockey club, EHC Bülach.

The storm punctured the arena's roofing, raising serious health concerns as the damaged Eternit panels may release asbestos. Local authorities have warned that the material must be handled and disposed of by specialists to prevent contamination. This environmental hazard complicates repair efforts, as the site requires strict cordoning and professional cleaning before construction can begin.

EHC Bülach president Tobias Plüss stated that the club is in a critical state, noting that the loss of their home rink makes continued operations throughout the season uncertain. The club faces estimated financial losses between 90,000 and 120,000 Swiss francs, a burden the club president says they cannot bear alone, expressing a reliance on the city for support. While some training sessions have been moved to nearby locations, the club has already had to cancel several practices and tournaments.
