Black August honors freedom fighters and Black political prisoners
Black August is a month dedicated to honoring freedom fighters and commemorating the lives and deaths of Black political prisoners. According to the Center for Constitutional Rights, the observance honors those within the prison-industrial complex who work toward the goal of abolition.
The tradition originated at California’s San Quentin Prison. To celebrate the month and the importance of Black literacy in liberation, several book recommendations by Black authors have been highlighted, including Cebo Campbell’s 2025 work, ‘Sky Full of Elephants’.
