Black bear attack in California injures couple and kills pet dog

A black bear attack in a remote area of Trinity County, California, left a couple injured and their pet dog dead. The incident occurred on September 19 near the Wilsons' vacation property, Radio Ranch.

Jeff and Mallory Wilson were attacked when a cinnamon-colored black bear emerged from behind patio furniture. Jeff suffered two broken ribs and multiple bite and claw wounds, while Mallory sustained serious head, facial, and body injuries. Their French bulldog, Cassie, intervened to protect them, placing herself between the owners and the bear. The bear attacked the dog, causing severe spinal and bodily injuries. Although Cassie underwent emergency surgery, she passed away three days later.

The couple, who have experience living alongside wildlife, described the encounter as unprovoked and extremely rare. Jeff suggested the bear may have been startled after becoming trapped between a fence and a gate. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is investigating the incident. CDFW noted that black bear attacks on humans are rare in the state and advised residents to secure food and waste to avoid attracting wildlife.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist the Wilsons with medical expenses, veterinary costs, and lost income during their recovery. The campaign has already raised significant funds toward its goal.
