Black bear attacks on increase in Colorado and British Columbia

Recent reports indicate a rise in black bear encounters and attacks across Colorado and British Columbia. In Colorado, officials from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) noted that bear sightings and conflicts have nearly doubled compared to the same period last year, with 6,129 reports recorded through mid-August. Recent incidents in the state included a man scratched near Eagle-Vail, a woman injured inside her home in Steamboat Springs, and a man bitten in an Aspen park.

In Canada, the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service reported a bear attack in Anmore, Metro Vancouver, which resulted in injuries to a woman and her dog. This follows a separate incident earlier in the month in Maple Ridge, where a three-year-old girl was attacked on a residential deck and required airlift transport to a hospital. Authorities in both regions are monitoring activity to ensure public safety.
