Black bear destroys Subaru after getting trapped in Juneau
A black bear caused extensive damage to a Subaru in Juneau, Alaska, after breaking into three different vehicles overnight on Monday. The animal became trapped inside the final vehicle, a blue Subaru, after entering through an unlocked door.
A neighbor alerted authorities after hearing the car horn blaring and spotting the bear inside. When police arrived, they found that the bear had already destroyed the vehicle's wiring, preventing the doors from being opened with keys. Officers eventually used a rope to pry the door open, freeing the bear, which ran away unharmed.
The vehicle owner, Michael Wilson, reported significant interior and exterior damage, including bent metal and torn seats. Because his insurance policy only included liability coverage rather than comprehensive, he must cover the costs of the destruction himself. Local residents have been advised to lock their vehicles and remove all food to avoid similar incidents, as scarce food sources have driven bears closer to human settlements.
