Black bear encounters rise in Coahuila and North Carolina

Black bears are increasingly appearing near human settlements in Coahuila, Mexico, and North Carolina, USA, due to seasonal feeding behaviors and proximity to food sources.

In Coahuila, a black bear was filmed peering through a cabin window in San Antonio de las Alanzas to access food. While the encounter was captured on video, experts warn that such interactions pose risks to both humans and animals, as bears may begin to associate people with easy meals.

In North Carolina, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) has issued an alert regarding hyperphagia, a pre-winter period where bears consume between 15,000 and 20,000 calories daily to build fat reserves. Authorities note that bird feeders, pet food, and unsecured trash attract bears to residential areas, particularly in counties like Buncombe, Haywood, and Henderson.
