Black bear populations rise across North America

Black bear populations are increasing significantly across North America, leading to more frequent encounters in suburban areas. In California, the population grew by approximately 45% between 2014 and 2024, rising from about 35,101 to 65,405. Other regions reporting high numbers include Vermont, where populations have exceeded target ranges, and North Carolina, where numbers have more than quadrupled over two decades.

This shift is driven by several factors, including population growth, habitat loss due to suburban sprawl, and changes in bear behavior. As natural habitats disappear, bears are increasingly entering residential areas in search of food.

To mitigate human-wildlife conflict, experts recommend several safety measures for residents. These include securing garbage in bear-resistant enclosures, managing fruit trees to prevent windfall, removing bird feeders from April through November, and keeping barbecues clean. Maintaining odor-free compost and protecting livestock with electric fences are also advised to prevent bears from becoming food-conditioned.
