Black bear sightings expand into South Jersey

While black bears are common in northern New Jersey, sightings in South Jersey remain relatively infrequent. According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), bears have been spotted in all 21 counties in the state, though the population is primarily concentrated in the northwest.

In a 2021 activity report, officials recorded minimal incidents in South Jersey counties, including two in Burlington, one in Camden, three in Gloucester, and three in Salem. Experts suggest that bears, particularly young ones seeking new territory, can travel long distances through forests, wetlands, and suburban areas. The state's bear range has also expanded south and east over time, making occasional sightings in areas near the Pinelands or large wooded spaces possible.
