Black bears cause disruptions in Colorado and Tennessee

Recent incidents involving black bears interacting with human food sources have highlighted the ongoing issue of wildlife habituation in tourist areas across the United States.

In Breckenridge, Colorado, a bear entered the Grand Timber Lodge through automatic doors early on August 6. The animal accessed a snack storage room and consumed M&Ms before being deterred by Breckenridge police officers using bright lights and the sound of a Taser. Officers noted that while most encounters involve bears scavenging in dumpsters or garages, this was a unique instance of an animal entering a commercial building.

In Gatlinburg, Tennessee, a bear was filmed in a parking lot attempting to break into a Jelly Belly candy machine on August 8. The encounter resulted in jelly beans being scattered across the lot. Experts note that such incidents, where animals associate human developments and calorie-dense foods with rewards, increase the risk of property damage and dangerous encounters, often leading to animals being relocated or killed.
