Black bears enter homes in Durango amid increased wildlife conflicts

Increased black bear activity in Durango, Colorado, has led to multiple dangerous encounters with residents. In one incident, a 17-year-old woman was attacked in her bedroom after a bear entered through a window. The teen sustained scratches and bruising but was able to hide under blankets until the animal left.

In a separate report, a resident shot at a bear that attempted to enter his home by tearing through a window screen. While the resident believed he missed, blood was discovered outside the following morning. Wildlife officials attempted to track the animal, but the trail was too sparse to follow.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officials attribute this “unprecedented bear conflict year” to drought conditions that have depleted natural food sources, forcing bears into populated areas. Residents are advised to secure trash, lock all entry points, and remove bird feeders to prevent further attractants.
