Black bears increasingly enter US residential areas
Increasing instances of black bears entering residential areas in the United States are being attributed to droughts reducing natural food sources like berries and nuts. In Colorado, a black bear was captured on surveillance footage entering a home through an open back door to consume snacks and vitamins before scavenging through trash.
In Los Angeles County, residents living near the Los Angeles National Forest have reported frequent visits from black bears using their backyard swimming pool to cool off. While the interactions have provided unique footage of bears swimming and resting, experts warn that such encounters highlight the growing overlap between urban expansion and wildlife habitats.
To maintain safety and prevent bears from associating human homes with food, residents and wildlife officials emphasize strict protocols: securing all trash, keeping doors and windows closed, and never feeding or approaching the animals. Experts note that if bears become habituated to human food, it often leads to increased conflict and the eventual necessity of capturing or euthanizing the animals.
