Black Brazilian narratives highlighted in new book and theatrical play

The book ‘Cinema de Favela’, organized by Luciano Vidigal and Isabella Rosado Nunes, was pre-launched at the Nós do Morro Festival in Rio de Janeiro. The work brings together ten Black filmmakers to discuss audiovisual production, memory, and the right of favela residents to control their own narratives. The publication examines the shift in Brazilian cinema over the last two decades, specifically regarding digital expansion and productions originating from peripheral territories, focusing on who occupies decision-making roles behind the camera.

In Campinas, a new theatrical production titled ‘Abdias do Nascimento’ will be presented at Teatro do Sesc Campinas. The play, written by Ivan Jaf and Diego Ferreira, explores the life and legacy of the activist, artist, and former senator who founded the Teatro Experimental do Negro (TEN). Rather than a strictly chronological biography, the performance uses the rehearsal process to confront contemporary issues of racial identity and systemic racism in Brazil.
