Black cinema soundtracks achieve cultural significance

Black cinema has produced numerous soundtracks that have become significant cultural moments independent of the films themselves. Notable examples include the soundtracks for ‘Waiting to Exhale’, featuring artists such as Whitney Houston, Brandy, and Toni Braxton, and ‘The Bodyguard’, which featured the phenomenon ‘I Will Always Love You’.

Other influential soundtracks include ‘Love Jones’, which utilized jazz, neo soul, and hip hop, and ‘Above the Rim’, a representative of 90s hip hop. Films such as ‘Boomerang’ and ‘The Best Man’ also utilized R&B and soul heavyweights to complement their narratives. Additionally, the ‘Black Panther’ soundtrack, curated by Kendrick Lamar, served as a major musical moment connecting the film's setting with contemporary Black music and culture.
