Black civil rights advocates hold lynching panel in Washington, D.C

At the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference, attorney Lee Merritt and Rev. Jamal Bryant organized a last-minute panel to address the issue of lynching, noting its absence from the official agenda.

The panel, held at the Westin Washington, D.C., Hotel, featured experts including civil rights attorneys, scientists, and mental health professionals. They discussed the history of racial violence and contemporary suspicious deaths of Black individuals that advocates fear may be modern-day lynchings.

Discussions focused on how the misclassification of deaths can derail investigations and how the crisis of Black suicide complicates these inquiries. One specific case highlighted was that of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old college football player whose body was found on Horn Island, Mississippi, on July 6. While law enforcement found no evidence of foul play, an independent autopsy in Washington, D.C. could not determine the cause or manner of death, leading to calls for increased transparency.
