Black cinema and television enter a new era of genre-defying storytelling

The past decade has emerged as a transformative and unconventional era for Black cinema and television. While many audiences associate the golden age of Black media with the 1980s and 1990s—citing figures like Spike Lee and Eddie Murphy—recent years have seen a shift toward more liberated and boundary-pushing storytelling.

Modern Black creators are increasingly moving beyond traditional genres such as comedy or historical drama to explore surrealism and afrofuturism. This new wave of programming often avoids the reliance on trauma or caricature that has historically limited the scope of Black narratives. By breaking through previous barriers imposed by industry executives, contemporary artists are producing a diverse stream of innovative and genre-defying work.
