Black Forest Open Air Museum preserves rural history

The Vogtsbauernhof Open Air Museum in Gutach, located in Germany's Black Forest, preserves six centuries of rural history through its collection of traditional farmhouses. Spanning seven hectares, the museum features a two-kilometer path through meadows, gardens, stables, and water mills.

Unlike many Mediterranean agricultural layouts that spread across multiple buildings, Black Forest architecture historically utilized vertical space. These large structures housed humans, animals, and hay under a single roof, with stables and kitchens on the ground floor and living quarters and haylofts above. Many of the buildings were relocated to the site by being dismantled beam by beam and reconstructed using original techniques.

The museum attracts over 220,000 visitors each season, with approximately 30 percent coming from abroad. Staff members have noted the architectural similarities between these structures and those found in Northern Italy, such as in South Tyrol, while visitors from Southern Italy often find the vertical design more exotic.
