Black History Month UK 2026 celebrates community and football pioneers

Black History Month UK 2026 is being observed under the theme ‘Honouring Our Communities’, focusing on individuals whose contributions sustain Black life across the United Kingdom. The month serves as a period for reflection, recognition, and education regarding the Black presence in Britain, from early history through the Windrush generation.

As part of the commemorations, The Football Association (FA) has profiled ten Black pioneers who shaped English football. These figures include players, managers, and referees spanning from the late 19th century to the modern era. Notable individuals highlighted by the FA include Arthur Wharton, recognized as the world’s first Black professional footballer, and Jack Leslie, who was the only Black professional in English football during his tenure at Plymouth Argyle.

Other pioneers mentioned in the FA’s feature include Viv Anderson, Cyrille Regis, and Luther Blissett. The initiative aims to shine a light on those whose historical milestones and community efforts have contributed to the past, present, and future of the nation.
