Black hole singularity research suggests 3D surface model

New research in theoretical physics suggests that the singularity inside a black hole may be a three-dimensional spacelike surface rather than the zero-dimensional point traditionally described in textbooks. Published in Physical Review D, the study by Andrew J. S. Hamilton of the University of Colorado Boulder and Tyler McMaken of the University of Mary argues that treating the singularity as a surface resolves causal contradictions that arise when modeling observers falling into a black hole.

This shift in understanding could impact the development of quantum gravity theories by changing the initial conditions where general relativity reaches its limits. The researchers note that even rotating black holes may collapse into similar spacelike singular surfaces due to mass inflation instability.
