Black rhino attacks tourist vehicle in Etosha National Park

A critically endangered black rhino attacked a vehicle carrying tourists in Etosha National Park, Namibia, on September 19. The animal repeatedly rammed the white jeep, causing significant damage by tearing off the engine cover and a side mirror.

Witnesses from the Etosha Salt Pan Adventure agency criticized the driver for failing to leave the area when the rhino began showing signs of agitation. Agency representatives warned that self-drive safaris are not equivalent to visiting a zoo, noting that wild animals can transition from calm to extremely dangerous in seconds. They emphasized that black rhinos, which are critically endangered, can react very quickly if they feel threatened or surprised.

No injuries were reported following the encounter, though the vehicle sustained substantial damage.
