Power cuts and ceiling collapse disrupt tourism on Romania’s Black Sea coast

In the middle of the summer peak, the Romanian Black Sea resorts of Saturn, Venus, Cap Aurora and Neptun suffered major electricity outages that left almost 100 hotels, restaurants and beach bars without power. Authorities said the failures were caused by the heavy demand from air‑conditioners and cooling equipment. Local mayor Paul Foleanu and Constanța County prefect Adrian Picoiu coordinated emergency repairs; power was largely restored around 01:00, although brief interruptions continued later in the day.

At the same time, a separate accident occurred at a hotel in Saturn when a portion of a false ceiling on the terrace fell during breakfast. A 57‑year‑old tourist was injured and taken to hospital. A witness described the event: “Tavanul a căzut în jurul orei 11:00… a prins o femeie și i-a spart capul.” The collapse also triggered panic, a temporary loss of electricity in the building and a lift entrapment that was later resolved by staff. Police opened a criminal investigation into the incident.

The combined disruptions affected thousands of tourists staying in the coastal region, raising concerns for the hospitality sector during the high‑season period.
