Progress IV vessel sinks in Black Sea after being hit

A commercial vessel, the Progress IV, flying the flag of the Dominican Republic, caught fire and sank in the Black Sea on August 27, 2026. The incident occurred in Romania's exclusive economic zone, approximately 20 nautical miles southeast of Sfântu Gheorghe.

President Nicușor Dan stated that the vessel was hit, though the identity of the attacker and the exact cause of the impact remain unknown. An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of the strike and subsequent fire.

Despite severe weather conditions, including waves reaching 2.5 meters, the Romanian Coast Guard and other nearby vessels successfully rescued all 12 crew members. The crew, consisting of Ukrainian and Azerbaijani nationals, was recovered from the water and a life raft. One crew member sustained serious hand injuries during the incident.
