Black Sea conservation projects map seagrass and advance sturgeon protection

Efforts to preserve the Black Sea ecosystem have reached new milestones through two major environmental initiatives.

Sinop University has completed a project focused on mapping seagrass distribution areas to strengthen the ecosystem's resilience against climate change. Funded by the European Union and the Turkish Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the project utilized artificial reef applications to boost marine biodiversity. The initiative also included educational activities and the transformation of underwater footage into digital art.

Separately, the SturNet Project, which aims to protect sturgeon populations in the Black Sea basin, held its 4th transnational meeting at Gebze Technical University. Supported by the Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin Program and the European Union, the meeting focused on reviewing data, discussing sturgeon marking processes, and establishing new cooperation steps for the upcoming period.
