Black Sea economic warfare intensifies as Russia and Ukraine target infrastructure

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has expanded into a significant economic and logistical war centered on the Black Sea. Russian forces have intensified strikes on Ukrainian ports, grain depots, energy infrastructure, and logistics hubs. On August 27, Kyiv reported that missiles and 258 drones targeted industrial sites, distribution centers, and ports in the Odessa region.

In response, Ukraine has increased attacks on Russian economic infrastructure, including refineries, terminals, and fuel depots. This campaign has impacted Russian diesel routes and threatened Novorossiysk, a primary Russian outlet on the Black Sea. Vladimir Putin has acknowledged this shift, accusing Ukraine of direct confrontation against sensitive economic sectors.

The maritime instability is forcing a reconfiguration of supply routes. Due to the disruption of mass maritime traffic in the Odessa region, military and commercial shipments are increasingly being redirected via land routes through Europe. This shift has increased the burden on road and rail transit to maintain the flow of essential goods and military supplies.
