Black Sea fishermen face net damage amid record bonito abundance

Fishermen in the Black Sea are experiencing one of the most abundant bonito (palamut) seasons since 2005. While the high volume of fish promises a productive season for those operating off the coasts of Tirebolu, Görele, Trabzon, and Hopa, it has also presented significant challenges.

Strong underwater currents, which remain invisible from the sea surface, have caused extensive damage to fishing nets. Crew members reported that while the surface appears calm, the currents flow like a stream beneath, causing nets to burst and tear.

To address these damages, several vessels have docked at Faroz Port in Trabzon to conduct repairs. Despite the financial risks and the physical labor required to mend the equipment, fishermen intend to return to sea as soon as the repairs are completed to capitalize on the current abundance.
