Black Sea fishing season sees high activity and strict quotas
The fishing season in the Black Sea has brought significant activity to regional hubs like Kefken Port. Following the opening of the season, large quantities of bonito (palamut) have been brought to shore, boosting local economic and commercial life. In Kefken, large bonito are being sold for approximately 90 TL per piece.
To ensure long-term sustainability and protect marine biological balance, authorities are strictly enforcing fishing quotas. İsa Kaplan, the Trabzon Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, noted that the national quota for anchovy (hamsi) is set at 400,000 tons, with 45,000 tons allocated specifically to the Black Sea region. Similarly, a national quota of 40,000 tons is in place for horse mackerel (istavrit), after which fishing must automatically cease. These regulations aim to preserve fish stocks for future generations.
