Black Sea geopolitical shifts impact global wheat markets
Global wheat markets have experienced recent volatility driven by shifting geopolitical tensions in the Black Sea. Wheat prices in Chicago, Kansas, and on the ASX eased following reports that Russia and Ukraine agreed not to target each other's energy infrastructure, a move traders viewed as a potential step toward de-escalation.
While optimism has reduced the risk premium, market stability remains uncertain. Future price movements depend on whether headlines suggest further de-escalation or renewed attacks on ports, ships, and export infrastructure.
Regarding production, APK-Inform has raised Ukraine's 2026/27 grain production forecast to 65.2Mt. However, expected exports have been lowered to 33.9Mt due to constrained Black Sea access, potentially leading to a record carryover of nearly 25Mt. This indicates that while Ukraine is producing grain for the global market, logistical constraints are preventing efficient movement, thereby supporting international prices.
