Black sitcoms influence sneaker culture and NBA designs
Pop culture interest in Black sitcoms is experiencing a resurgence, evidenced by upcoming projects such as a Netflix revival of ‘A Different World’ and the Paramount+ spinoff ‘The Varnell Hill Show’ based on the series ‘Martin’.
This cultural influence has extended into sneaker design. NBA player Ja Morant has released a ‘Halloween’ colorway for his Nike Ja 4 signature sneaker, which draws inspiration from a 1996 episode of ‘Martin’. The shoe’s red, black, and white palette and bow accents reference the costume worn by the character in the episode ‘Boo’s in the House’.
Historically, lead characters in prominent sitcoms like ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ and ‘A Different World’ have used footwear to establish character personality and connect with audiences, highlighting a long-standing link between sneaker culture and Black television.
