Black spitting cobra sighted near Serangoon Gardens
The National Parks Board (NParks) has conducted searches for a black spitting cobra, scientifically known as Naja sumatrana, following sightings near Mei Hwan Drive in the Serangoon Gardens area. Despite activating contractors to survey the vicinity, the snake was not located.
NParks stated that they will continue to monitor the area and will relocate any cobras that are subsequently sighted. The black spitting cobra is native to Singapore and is found in various habitats, including urban areas, gardens, and forests, where it preys on rodents and amphibians.
While highly venomous, these snakes are generally shy and tend to avoid human contact. However, if cornered or provoked, they may stand erect, hiss, and spit venom that can travel more than one metre, potentially causing serious eye irritation or temporary vision loss. NParks advises the public to maintain a safe distance, remain calm, and avoid attempting to handle the snake.
