Black women face rising unemployment following U.S. DEI policy changes

Black women in the United States are facing significant economic challenges following federal actions targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. An executive order terminating DEI offices and related contracts has been linked to widespread job losses. Reports indicate that between January and August 2025, approximately 251,000 Black women lost jobs, while other estimates suggest unemployment figures for Black women reached over 800,000 by December 2025.

In response to these shifts, many Black women are turning toward entrepreneurship and political leadership. Notable figures include Keisha Lance Bottoms running for governor in Georgia, Juliana Stratton seeking a Senate seat in Illinois, and Angie Nixon, who won a Senate primary in Florida. Journalists are also highlighting individual stories of resilience to provide human context to the large-scale unemployment statistics.
