BlackBerry pivots to automotive software and security

BlackBerry has transitioned from a mobile phone manufacturer to a software and security provider, reporting a positive net cash position in the first quarter of the fiscal year—a milestone not reached since 2017.

The company’s growth is driven primarily by two segments: QNX and Secusmart. QNX, an operating system used in automotive, robotics, medical, defense, and aerospace sectors, accounts for approximately 50% of total revenue. BlackBerry is also expanding its partnership with Nvidia to integrate QNX into autonomous and surgical robotics.

On the security side, Secusmart provides encrypted communication solutions for 20 governments and various large financial institutions. CEO John Giamatteo noted that the company has moved from a period of transformation into a period of growth.
