Blackberry production expands in Akşehir and Tekirdağ

Farmers in Turkey are expanding blackberry production as a high-value alternative to traditional fruit crops. In Akşehir, producer Mehmet Kadir Şarlak has grown his operation from an initial 1-decare plan to approximately 55 decares of blackberry cultivation. The region's climate and soil are noted for being highly suitable for berries, which offer better resistance to late spring frosts compared to cherries and sour cherries.

In Tekirdağ, specifically in the Süleymanpaşa district, new blackberry orchards are being established with a focus on varieties suitable for fresh consumption. Producer Ahmet Semih Yaşasın, a retired agricultural engineer, is utilizing licensed varieties bred by Arkansas University in the United States. These specific varieties are chosen for their long shelf life and durability during transport, with the goal of exporting produce to both Istanbul and European markets.
