Blackchin tilapia detected in Kalasin's Lam Pao Dam
Authorities in Kalasin province are monitoring the presence of invasive blackchin tilapia in the Lam Pao Dam. Recent inspections confirmed the discovery of four more fish, marking the fourth time the species has been detected in the reservoir this month.
During a necropsy of the captured fish, officials found that two of the specimens were females with eggs ready for spawning. While the situation is currently considered under control, officials are taking precautions to prevent the species from spreading to local shrimp farms. The Department of Fisheries noted that the current density has not yet reached the threshold of 10 fish per 100 square meters required to declare an emergency disaster zone.
To mitigate the risk, local administration and fisheries officials are coordinating with local fishermen to conduct surveys and removals, particularly during dawn when the fish tend to surface for air. Officials have confirmed that the fish are safe for human consumption and are encouraging citizens to report any sightings to prevent ecological damage.
