Blackpool couple on trial for murder of adopted baby Preston Davey

John McGowan‑Fazakerley, 32, and Jamie Varley, 37, are on trial at Preston Crown Court for the murder of their adopted son, Preston Davey, a 13‑month‑old baby who died on 27 July 2023. The boy had been placed in their Blackpool home in April 2023 after being adopted following a period in foster care. Prosecutors allege he suffered repeated physical, emotional and sexual abuse, including indecent photographs and videos, and died from acute upper‑airway obstruction, possibly smothering, after a sexual assault. The court heard graphic evidence of multiple injuries, a bite mark and signs of forcible penetration. Both men deny the charges, which also include child cruelty, grievous bodily harm and sexual assault. During a police interview shown to the jury, McGowan‑Fazakerley described the night of Preston’s collapse as “like a soap opera” and recounted his shock at the hospital.

The trial highlights concerns over adoption screening and child protection, with Oldham Council having placed the child into care before the couple’s adoption.
