Blackpool Sets 2026 Illuminations Schedule and Pushes 2029 City of Culture Bid

Blackpool’s annual Illuminations will open on Friday, 4 September 2026, running along the traditional route from Starr Gate to Red Bank Road until Sunday, 1 November. The switch‑on ceremony at 9:15 pm will feature performances by pop group Five, The Feeling and singer‑songwriter Lucy Spraggan, and will be hosted by BBC Radio Lancashire presenters. While the ceremony is free, tickets are allocated via a ballot of 20,000 places, with a £5 administration fee and a £12 guaranteed‑entry option. After the switch‑on, the light display will remain on the promenade from 2 November to 3 January, and the accompanying Christmas‑by‑the‑Sea winter market will run from 21 November to 2 January.

Separately, Blackpool is campaigning to become the United Kingdom’s City of Culture for 2029. The bid, to be decided later this year, highlights the town’s record of attracting around 20 million visitors annually and its recent hospitality accolades, such as multiple World Luxury Hotel Awards and a VisitEngland service‑excellence award. Proponents argue that the city’s historic attractions, from its seaside promenade to its cultural venues, make a strong case for the upcoming bid.
