BlackRock expands Italian bank stakes and launches buffered Bitcoin ETF

BlackRock is diversifying its financial footprint through both cryptocurrency products and increased holdings in the Italian banking sector. The firm has filed for a new buffered Bitcoin fund, the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF (PBIT), which aims to provide investors with 10% downside protection using overlapping options tranches to mitigate volatility.

In the cryptocurrency market, US spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced a significant shift. Following three days of inflows totaling approximately $1.07 billion, the market saw a net outflow of $635.6 million on October 22. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) recorded the largest single-day outflow of $254.1 million. While Bitcoin ETFs saw recent activity, Ethereum ETFs faced challenges, with BlackRock’s Ethereum funds losing $271.8 million over the last seven days.

Simultaneously, BlackRock has increased its stakes in major Italian financial institutions. According to filings with CONSOB, the firm’s total participation in Intesa Sanpaolo rose to 7.3% from 5.1%. It also significantly increased its position in UniCredit, moving from 5.6% to 8.92%. These moves come amid a period of strategic consolidation within the Italian banking sector.
