BlackRock urges selectivity as French bond yields rise
BlackRock Investment Institute has emphasized the necessity of selectivity in fixed-income markets as global bond yields rise. The firm notes that while higher yields are becoming the norm, investors must distinguish between different drivers of yield increases, specifically citing the recent sell-off in French government bonds as a primary example.
France’s 10-year bond yield has risen approximately 100 basis points since early August, approaching 5%. This increase, along with a widening spread against German Bunds, reflects growing investor concerns regarding France’s fiscal and political risks. BlackRock highlights that market participants are closely watching an upcoming credit rating decision from Moody’s regarding France, which could further pressure its debt.
In contrast to the volatility in Europe, BlackRock recently upgraded its outlook on US Treasuries, suggesting value in longer-dated US debt at current levels. The firm also noted that the current market environment differs significantly from the 2011-12 eurozone debt crisis due to stronger banking sectors and more robust tools available to the European Central Bank. Other strategic shifts include a reduced underweight on Japanese government bonds and a preference for emerging market local-currency debt, particularly in Latin America.
