BlackRock wins €70B Dutch pension mandate from BpfBouw
BlackRock has been selected as the preferred manager for nearly €70 billion ($80 billion) in assets for BpfBouw, the pension fund for the Dutch construction sector. The firm secured the mandate by outperforming competitors including Goldman Sachs Asset Management and Achmea Investment Management.
BpfBouw chose BlackRock due to its global footprint, fiduciary management capabilities, and commitment to socially responsible investing. The fund maintains a strong financial position with a funding ratio between 133.1% and 141%. This new mandate replaces APG Asset Management, which faces transition restrictions related to its relationship with the ABP civil service pension fund.
This appointment is a significant recovery for BlackRock in the Netherlands, following the loss of approximately €14.5 billion in equity mandates from PFZW and €5 billion from PME in 2025. Those losses were attributed to concerns regarding the firm’s ESG performance and alignment with climate risk standards. BlackRock currently manages over €350 billion for Dutch clients.
