Bladder Cancer in Women: Key Symptoms and Early Detection Advice
Bladder cancer, traditionally linked to men, also affects women and is often under‑recognized. Early signs such as hematuria, increased urinary frequency, urgency, burning or persistent pelvic pain can be mistaken for common urinary infections or gynecological problems, leading to delayed diagnosis.
Dr. Cristina de Castro of Hospital Ruber Internacional warns that any blood in the urine must be investigated by a urologist. She notes that women are frequently diagnosed at later stages, resulting in a poorer prognosis. Tobacco smoking is cited as the cause of roughly half of all bladder‑cancer cases.
Detecting the disease early allows for less aggressive treatment and better outcomes. Standard options include transurethral tumor resection and intravesical BCG immunotherapy, while muscle‑invasive disease may require surgery, chemotherapy, systemic immunotherapy, targeted therapies and robotic techniques.
