Blagoevgrad to host premiere of Philip Petkovski’s ‘Blood Wedding’

The production ‘Blood Wedding’ by Federico Garcia Lorca is set to premiere on September 7 at the ‘Nikola Vapcarov’ Dramatic Theatre in Blagoevgrad. Directed, adapted, and choreographed by Macedonian director Philip Petkovski, the play is described as a modern scenic ritual.

The production blends physical and postdramatic theatre, dance, and Balkan folklore heritage. Rather than reconstructing Lorca’s Andalusia, the staging creates a unique world incorporating Romani and Balkan elements, particularly through the music of Petar Dundakov. The performance emphasizes movement and choreography over dominant text to express the emotional states of characters caught between societal expectations and personal desires.

Key creative contributors include Martin Manev, who designed the scenography, and Antonija Guginska Jordanoska, who handled costume design by interpreting Andalusian culture through a contemporary aesthetic.
